FOLLOWING from the heavy rains earlier this month, oyster growers on Narooma’s Wagonga Inlet are only now beginning to harvest after the lake was closed due to water quality conditions after the influx of fresh water.

Two of the lake’s four sections were open to restricted harvest where growers take the oysters back to their shed for depuration where water treated with UV light is run over them before they can be sold to restaurants or fish shops.
Additional results from water quality testing were expected back yesterday to see if unrestricted harvest of the top sections at least could resume.
But even with some harvesting there was restricted supply at a time of typical high demand and spare a thought for growers on the Tuross Lake system where continued freshwater coming down the river was still restricting harvest of any kind.
While the top portions of the Clyde River system had also opened to restricted harvest, other systems to the south at Pambula and Wapengo were also waiting on test results, further restricting supply of Sydney rock oysters on the Far South Coast.
