‘It was a really great community day with about 2,500 race goers which was 10 to 15 per cent up on last year’s numbers,’ said Moruya Jockey Club Manager Brian Cowden.
‘Local trainers were also thrilled; they won five out of the eight races.’
Organisers Batemans Bay, Moruya and Narooma Rotary Clubs in conjunction with the Jockey Club, aimed to raise sufficient funds on the day to enable Moruya Cancer Carers (MCC) to meet its target for assisting Moruya’s new Oncology Unit.
MCC chairman Cr Pollock said it was ‘a terrific day’ and complimented the Rotarians who contributed so much to the day’s success and congratulated those who coordinated activities.
‘While it is still too early to say just how much money was raised on the day, I am confident we will now exceed our fundraising target,’ he said.
Rotary spokesman David Ashford thanked sponsors, local organisations and all race goers for supporting the day.
There were fashions on the field, raffles and other fundraising activities, and Santa also dropped by.
Raffle winner was Phillip Bracewell of Dalmeny who drove up to the racecourse especially to collect the framed Rabbitoh’s jumper signed by this year’s Premiers.
Second prize was won by Brad Cotton of Bermagui, and third prize by A Collett, also of Dalmeny.
Cr Pollock said the contract for completing the new Oncology Unit at Moruya Hospital has now been signed. It is being incorporated in the construction of the new Sub-Acute Rehabilitation Unit at Moruya Hospital largely in response to strong community pressure.
He said while the new Oncology Unit is being built and equipped by the Government, Moruya Cancer Carers will provide the ambience and assist with the fit out of the new unit in conjunction with staff.
