Surfer Anthony Hill is on a mission to save our oceans from plastic pollution, and he’s bringing his Family Trivia Tour to the Eurobodalla in March.
He will host trivia nights and school visits in the Eurobodalla, where he has been visiting the past few days.
Mr Hill, a native of Coffs Harbour, lived in Norway for 21 years, returning home five months ago.
“I used to do a lot of kayaking and camping in the beautiful fiords in Norway, but AI would always notice a lot of plastic, and it bothered me,” he said.
“I went to a seminar at a conference about marine debris in (Oslo) Norway’s capital this year, and saw the horrific extent of plastic we put in the world’s oceans,” he said.
“If everyone could see it we would be making fundamental changes to the way we live.”
While in Norway, in the city Bergen, Mr Hill worked as a quiz master at the pub he ran.
“It was the only trivia venue in town,” he said.
He got so good at hosting trivia events that he hosted quizzes on TV and radio.
He is looking forward to bringing this to the Eurobodalla, a place he has grown fond of.
“I had never been here before,” he said.
“I like it a lot better than the North Coast. It has a really different beauty, with its geography and topography.”
He is also impressed with the efforts of Eurobodalla residents in stopping plastic rubbish from ending up in the oceans.
“People are really onto it here,” he said.
“This is one of the most aware communities I have come across. The surf here is also not as crowded.”
No events have been officially organised yet, but Mr Hill has been in touch with the Marine Debris Working Group’s Bernadette Davis, and wants to organise some trivia nights where the proceeds will go to the Australian Marine Debris Initiative and the Surfrider Foundation.
He also wants to conduct presentations at primary schools, and share ideas about how young people can make a difference.
“It will be fun, not all about gloom and doom,” he said.
