The group applied for a grant in the latest round of funding from Donate Life, the Australian Government’s organ and tissue authority, and with the money will hold a ‘Donate Life Day in the Park beside the Clyde.’

It will be an organ donation-themed day of community engagement and information to be held on March 7 at the park on Clyde Street south-west of the Batemans Bay bridge.

“It is in its fledgling stages, but we will have the support of Kidney Health Australia, Eurobodalla Shire Council and hopefully Batemans Bay Lions Club,” Eurobodalla Renal Support Group and Organ Donor Awareness’s Brad Rossiter said.

Mr Rossiter said that if any group or agency wanted to get involved, they could ring him on 4472 8074.

“The day will be overtoned with the message of Donate Life, which is talk to your family about your decision to become an organ donor.”  

Mr Rossiter, a double organ recipient, is delighted about the grant.

“Donate Life was happy that what we were doing would create family discussion about organ donation,” he said.

This has been a major issue for Donate Life, as grieving family members have often been able to deny the wishes of people wanting to donate their organs.

The remainder of the money from the grant will be spent on Eurobodalla Renal Support Group and Organ Donor Awareness’ information event, which will be broadcast live on radio station 2EC during Donate Life Week, August 2-9.

Donate Life Week has moved from its usual February slot to August, something Mr Rossiter is happy about.

“It gives us a bit more space for the year,” he said.

“In February, it is too soon after Christmas.”
