Mrs McDermott said she was overwhelmed by the amount of donations but would like to see more.
“So far we have enough for 15 hampers but ideally we would like to have 20 or 25 for the patrons,” she said.
“I didn’t expect people to be donating $20 boxes of chocolate.
“The community really got on board for the challenge.”
Already 20 families have registered with the soup kitchen for help.
“I would hate to turn anyone away,” Mrs McDermott said.
“Over the past few weeks we have been taking names from patrons and asking them how many people are in their family.
“But patrons who haven’t been for a couple of weeks may turn up on the night.”
The hampers will be given out at the soup kitchen’s Christmas Eve dinner.
Donations will be collected at Vaemp Shoes and Coconut Grove in Batemans Bay and at the Mossy Point Muffin Shop until close of business Monday.
Mrs McDermott is also putting the call out to anyone who is competent in driving a large manual vehicle and can drive the soup kitchen bus as often as possible.
