The crew, led by senior fireman Nathan Pascoe, was called to the spot on the Princes Highway near Lake Conjola where a passer-by had noticed the “unknown product” burning.
“They tried to put it out with their fire extinguisher but it flared up more,” a Batemans Bay Fire and Rescue spokesman said.
“We would douse it with water and it would self-ignite again. We used 4000 litres of water on it.”
The Batemans Bay unit joined another Fire and Rescue crew from Ulladulla and a Rural Fire Service crew from Lake Conjola.
Eventually, the fire crews contained the substance and watched it until it was completely burnt out.
The substance is still unknown.
