The crash on Beach Road in Batehaven involved three cars, but details of how it happened are unclear.
It is believed a black BMW crashed into two stationary vehicles.
A Fire and Rescue spokesman said they used absorbent materials to soak up the spill, that spread 40 metres.
"We didn't want it to get into the storm water drain and then into the ocean," he said.
More details will be available as they come to hand.
