The C grade Pirates share equal first on the ladder after a comprehensive win against Tathra at Bermagui on Saturday.
The Pirates won the toss and skipper Boyd Brennan elected to bat as the team was brimming with confidence after two previous scores above 200.
Unfortunately, some good bowling by Tathra, and an injury to opener Boyd, restricted the Pirates to a final total of 119.
Ty Hitchins was the standout batsman, top scoring with 25 runs and Lachlan Brennan scored 19.
In the field the Pirates made amends after their poor batting effort.
Tathra’s batsmen were dismissed regularly with the Pirates bowlers playing well as a unit.
Simon Hitchins was the Pirates’ most successful bowler, picking up three wickets, and he was well supported by Ty Hitchins, Josh Cupitt and Lachlan Brennan, who each collected two.
Tathra was dismissed for 62 runs in only 19 overs, in a comfortable win for Southern Eurobodalla.
In B grade, the Pirates faced Bermagui in the local derby.
There was good competition and sportsmanship shown as a number of Bermagui’s players were in Pirates’ colours last season.
Bermagui batted first and lost its first three wickets with only 36 runs on the board.
Jay Walpole, Elijah Blair and John Murray were the Pirates’ early wicket takers, but then Bermagui consolidated its innings to advance the score to a decent total of 179.
Walpole was the outstanding performer with the ball, taking 4/28 from eight overs and David Moran chipped in to take 2/27.
The Pirates began the run chase confidently and Alex Filmer-Smith (29), David Sweet (22), Blair (24) and Matt Klose (20) all got good starts with the bat, but none were able to be an anchor for the side.
A steady fall of wickets ended the Pirates innings on 156, 24 runs short of victory.
After having a bye last week, the A grade begins the Twenty20 competition, B grade will host Merimbula and C grade will play Mallacoota at Bermagui.
