ELEVEN of the Eurobodalla’s most hard-working athletes have returned with either a gold, silver or bronze medal from their respective events at the Special Olympics National Games in Melbourne.

Moruya’s Craig Hropic-Mitchell, Liz Godwin, Laurie Masterson, Heidi Jay, Sharon Himan, Brett Bottle and Caitlin Blay, Tuross Head’s Madison Windley, Turlinjah’s Reanna Hardy and Batemans Bay’s Amy Foot and Hayley Badenoch were among 1000 athletes who took to the field, court or pool for the 10th National games.
Jay and Himan picked up two gold medals in the pool at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.
Each won a relay gold while Himan took out her 50m backstroke race and Jay won the 50m breaststroke.
Himan finished second to Jay in the breaststroke.
On the basketball court Hropic-Mitchell was in NSW’s division one men’s gold medal winning team.
“All of our games were close ones,” Hropic-Mitchell said.
Windley also won gold as part of NSW’s division one women’s team and Hardy won gold in division D mixed.
Liz Godwin also played in the division D mixed competition and collected a bronze medal.
Laurie Masterson and his NSW team mates won bronze in the men’s division two competition.
Masterson said it was a tiring week and he was happy to be back playing at Moruya on Monday night.
On the football pitch Bottle’s NSW division one team finished third.
At the Darebin International Sports Centre Blay, Badenoch and Foot competed for medals in tenpin bowling.
Blay, who also took her guide dog Danny for his first trip to Melbourne, returned with three silver medals from singles, doubles and mixed.
Badenoch won silver in the doubles with Blay and picked up a bronze in the team’s event.
Foot’s team won silver while she won bronze in the doubles.
