Open to people who have finished cancer treatment, their carers, family members and close friends, the program is free but registration is essential for catering purposes.
The Cancer Council’s community programs co-ordinator, Jennifer Mozina, says about 36,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year.
“More than 65 per cent of people treated for the disease survive, and many need support to face the challenges that follow,” she said.
“Cancer often has an impact on people’s emotional, social and financial wellbeing.
“Some changes are obvious - cancer surgery can alter someone’s appearance - but cancer is an experience that can also affect a person’s entire outlook on life.”
In support of people affected by cancer in the Eurobodalla, Cancer Council NSW has organised a free program, Living Well After Cancer, for people who have finished cancer treatment.
“The program is run by trained cancer survivors who offer advice and ideas about life after cancer,” Jennifer said.
“It is also an opportunity for people to connect with others in their area who have been through a similar experience.”
Carol Rhodes, a cancer survivor who attended a Living Well After Cancer program, said that, for her, life after cancer was a confronting and challenging time.
“I know I look like I did before cancer, but I’ve changed,” Carol said.
“Meeting with other cancer survivors made me feel less alien and less alone.
“The advice also helped me communicate how I felt with my friends and family.”
Registration for the Living Well After Cancer program in Moruya is essential for catering purposes and should be made by October 24.
