In the one family for four generations, Moruya’s historic Gundary Hotel has been sold.
The 1891 Hawdon St building was once the James Baron Hotel and became a maternity ward in the 1930s, before becoming a private home.
The Constable family has owned the property for most of its life and for Paul Constable, putting it up for auction on Thursday last week was a tough call.
“My father owned the house before it was handed to me, and his uncle was the original owner,” Mr Constable said.
“It was a difficult decision.
"The house was special for my dad and my aunty Doreen, who both would spend time with Aunty Nell, the last resident.
“Aunty Nell passed away in 1980s, my father recently, and the rest of the family didn’t use the property.
“My dad who had the real connection to the house, but it doesn’t hold that for anyone else and so it was time to let it go.”
The beautiful, 123-year-old house sold for $432,000, well above the region's median house price of $325,000.
Ray White Real Estate agent Steve Mason said the heritage-listed property created huge interest, with more than 100 people attending its first inspection.
“The auction was a success, with more than 30 people turning up on the day,” Mr Mason said.
“We had three registered bidders and there was a little bit of a battle happening, but the winner, we believe, was a former local who’d like to keep a low profile.
“As we understand it, he has a connection with the house, with his parents taking care of the late Mrs Constable.”
