After hosting Noel Pearson and a large group of indigenous leaders at a dinner on Wednesday night, Tony Abbott slipped away from his Gulkula campsite on far North-East Arnhem Land and did something no Prime Minister has done before him. For almost an hour, Abbott joined the team that patrols the streets of the Nhulunbuy township and the nearby Yirrkala community, ferrying home intoxicated adults and kids who should be in bed.
