The Surf Beach unit took on its counterparts from all over the state at Pambula last weekend, winning the fireground fundamentals and sprint challenge events.
They were second in the instrument catastrophe event.
The unit’s success pleased, but did not surprise, Surf Beach captain Ashley Blackman.
“I thought we would have a good chance, because we have put in a lot of training and it is all about having the skills of a firefighter,” he said.
“A couple of members go back to 2004 with this event, but the new guys in the team found it enjoyable.”
Surf Beach had six firefighters and many supporters at the championships.
Bodalla RFS cadets picked up two second placings as well.
Far South Coast RFS team leader John Cullen praised the event.
“It was very competitive and closely contested, with prizes evenly spread throughout the state,” he said.
“This year saw the return of the chainsaw events and there was a kitchen rules event, which was a cook-off between catering teams.”
The Far South Coast won the President’s Award, based on the performance of all of its units, and will receive $13,000 in training equipment.
