Every term U3A’s popular Saturday talks are run by members who have some expertise, talent, hobby or skill of more than general interest.
Rob Geraghty, who has a longstanding interest in the natural environment, shared his experiences on a trip to Patagonia, Antarctica and the Falklands Islands with members on August 16.
An accomplished photographer, Rob showed a gallery of wildlife shots, perhaps the most stunning being a series taken at the precise moment an icesheet “calved”.
The presenter of the next Saturday talk will be Gillian Hall, who began a career in antiques in 1977.
When she moved to the Bay in 1985, she ran Finders Keepers in Batehaven, which will be fondly remembered by many people.
After selling the business in 1992 Gillian attended antique fairs in southern NSW for many years.
On September 13, Gillian will give a talk on how to identify hallmarks and distinguish these from EPNS and old Sheffield plate, some of which can have mystifying marks similar to solid silver.
Hallmarks can also be used to help date old pieces.
People are encouraged to take along their own pieces, be they solid or plate, for discussion.
The talk will be held at Malua Bay Community Centre, from 10am to noon.
Entry for U3A members and non-members is by gold coin donation.
It is advisable to book on 4471 2788 or romar49@bigpond.net.au.
