The feature race, the South Coast Registered Clubs Cup, was won by last season’s premiership winning trainer, Lynda Bundy, and the veteran nine-year-old gelding Moorings Royal.
Moorings Royal ($17) won the 1425m race by the slightest of margins with the top six horses finishing within one length of each other.
Jockey Club manager Brian Cowden was rapt to see a Moruya-trained horse win the feature event.
“He proves you’re never too old,” Cowden said.
“He has to have everything right and the likes the track to be a little bit soft.
“It all worked out for him on the day.”
Bundy nabbed her first win of the day with four-year-old gelding Jackaizane taking out the Class three 1010m race.
John Peiti’s Brown Bob ($14) flew home in the straight to win the 2000m Benchmark 60 handicap by almost three lengths.
In the final race of the day a third Moruya trainer shared in the spoils.
Michael Gatty and his five-year-old gelding Rush Indulgence ($18) blitzed the field to take home the Class 2 1425m handicap by more than three lengths.
Cowden said he spoke with trainers from further north and they were impressed by the quality of the track despite the constant rain.
“They had not been able to train their horses for three weeks and Moruya trainers have had one day’s break,” Cowden said.
“They couldn’t believe how well the track looked and came up after all the rain.”
Cowden praised the weather and the attendance despite a range of events clashing with the meeting.
“When you consider the weather we must be doing something right and the crowd was up on what we were expecting with all the different activities at Moruya on Sunday,” he said.
The next race meeting will be on Melbourne Cup Day, November 4, and bookings are rising.
“We’re filling up with bookings so we advise people to get in soon,” Cowden said.
