Plan A involved a footy clinic with Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants AFL players before the dinner, to christen BMG’s new home at Gundary Oval.
After the heavens opened yet again, plan B was hatched.
There was no clinic but a 196cm GWS rising star, fullback Tim Mohr, flew down to speak at the dinner.
Mohr ended up stranded in Merimbula waiting for repairs to his plane.
Nevertheless, plan C was a great success and a terrific night was had by all.
The committee carried on, led by president Doug Williams, and more than 100 AFL devotees, including 40 kids, filled the room to banish any bad weather blues.
NSW/ACT AFL officials John Dyball, Jarrod Moore and Kate Wells supplied GWS Giants giveaways for all the children, and some childish adults.
Several new BMG sponsors were announced and raffle prizes on the night included a GWS playing jumper, which was donated and signed by the 2014 players, won by Kobe Tuan.
Winners also took home two weekend passes to the Granite Town Jazz Food & Funk Festival donated by the Granite Town committee, handmade chocolates and wine liberated from the BMG president’s wine cellar.
BMG praised all those who attended the dinner and made it a success despite the torrential rain.
The first season for the BM Giants will begin in March.
The club will field Auskick/under 9s, under 11s and under 13s.
After a strong community response, the committee also plans to run a mixed age/gender touch nine-a-side version of the game over spring/summer.
“This is one way the club will start to realise its mission as a community building and health promoting agency,” president Doug Williams said.
Anyone interested in AFL or the new club can attend the inaugural AGM on September 11, 6.30pm, at the Moruya Bowling Club.
