Year 10’s Kateia Barenaba and year 9’s Lily Attwood were selected after standing out for the South Coast’s team at the NSW championships and at trial days.
The girls will play two games a day against teams from each state and they have their eyes set on a top four position.
The girls’ South Coast coach, Bronwyn Ackhurst, is also their NSW coach and set the team a target.
“Our coach wants us to finish in the top four and hopefully we can go further,” Attwood said.
Barenaba plays universal, either on the outside or in the middle, and players of her position are useful on all areas of the court as a universal player can set, block, slam or dig.
Attwood plays libero and her position acts as a defensive specialist.
She is responsible for receiving serves and covering more of the court than her team mates.
Both girls were excited for the trip to Adelaide after training three times a week with the Bay High team and every second weekend with the under 16s and open CHS team.
“Our teacher Fiona Saunders asked us to play this year and now we’re here,” Barenaba said.
Barenaba has played with a number of her NSW team mates before but Attwood met many for the first time at training.
“You get used to new people quickly when you play,” Attwood said.
Barenaba was injury free in the lead up while Attwood fractured her wrist but played down the severity.
“It will be okay at the tournament,” she said.
