Members of the Long Beach community have been campaigning against this policy since its adoption by council four years ago.
Our argument has never been against sea-level rise or the development of policies to deal with it. Our argument is against the damaging and embarrassingly deficient approach taken to it by the Eurobodalla Shire Council.
No other council in Australia has committed such sins against their ratepayers, nor been so resolutely deaf to reasonable criticism.
Most people now accept that sea-level rise is real and expect that appropriate action should be taken. That is, or course, the big issue.
How rapidly are the risks unfolding and what is a reasonable response proportional to the real risks as they arise?
I hope that everyone keeps these questions uppermost in their minds, especially now that the Coastal Zone Management Plan is about to get under way.
Let us hope that none of the flawed approaches of council’s infamous policy find their way into that.
