The state government has announced that by the end of 2015 all schools in NSW would have the lights installed. The lights are already installed at 1350 schools, but about 1500 schools, including Moruya High School, Batemans Bay Public School, St Mary’s Primary School at Moruya and St Bernard’s Primary School at Batehaven, will get them from February 2015.
Bega MP Andrew Constance said it was the second phase of a rollout, the first being the installation of lights outside schools indentified at high-risk.
“The lights will continue to include back to base technology which ensures they operate consistently and any faults can be addressed quickly,” he said.
“These lights will be retrofitted to existing school zone signs at the main entry point for each school and include flashing lanterns that we know are effective at slowing drivers down.”
St Bernard’s principal Jacqueline Heffernan is delighted that the school will be getting the lights.
“I campaigned for it for years when I was at St Mary’s,” she said.
“It will be a continual reminder for parents to slow down and raise awareness of the importance of protecting our precious children.”
St Bernard’s captain Nicholas Usher agrees.
“It is very good and it will make it much safer for all the students,” he said.
Moruya High School principal John Walsh said that it was a “natural progression in traffic management around schools” and that it would raise driver awareness of schools that are not on main roads, such as Moruya High School.
“You take a sharp right at the golf course and you are on top of the school,” he said.
“I believe it will alert people and is a step in the right direction.”
