The project will be funded from $530,000 allocated to the Eurobodalla to undertake road upgrades throughout the 2014/15 financial year through the federal government’s black spot program.
The funding includes $200,000 to install a pedestrian refuge island crossing point near Tomakin Road and a footpath between the supermarket on George Bass Drive and the refuge, as well as improve street lighting.
Other approved projects are $170,000 to install a high friction seal on the Kings Highway east of River Forest Road and $160,000 to provide wider shoulders, additional signage and guardrails along George Bass Drive from Roseby Drive to Illabunda Drive.
The projects were recommended by a panel of independent road safety experts.
Dr Hendy said the Eurobodalla applied and put forward a “good case” to secure the funding.
“The black spot program deals with road safety issues,” Mr Hendy said.
“The Eurobodalla applied through a formal process with Roads and Maritime and the federal government, who prioritises issues.”
Mr Hendy said the investment in black spot projects would deliver safer roads for Eden-Monaro through targeted upgrades proven to deliver results.
“Black spot projects target dangerous roads to save lives and reduce road trauma, ensuring our local roads are safer for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians,” he said.
Mayor Lindsay Brown said the funding was spread across the shire in “really important spots”.
“The idea behind the Tomakin work is to get pedestrians out of Tomakin and up to the shops safely,” Cr Brown said.
