Cadets are taught bush survival skills, first aid, navigation, teamwork, drill and leadership.
The 222 South Coast Army Cadet unit is currently on a recruitment drive.
It will hold its final information night for potential recruits at Carroll College on Tuesday night.
The unit meets at Carroll College every Tuesday night from 6pm to 9pm, and is for South Coast students aged from 12–and-a-half to 18.
The unit is part of 24 Battalion, which takes in Canberra and outlying areas. It holds several local bivouacs (camps) each year and the whole battalion also attends an annual camp at an army base.
Cadet Under Officer (CUO) Samantha Law, who now runs the unit, has found her time at cadets over the years “very rewarding”.
“To see young people grow in their confidence as their skills increase is amazing; to learn leadership is a great life skill,” she said.
“You don’t have to be the smartest, coolest or the fastest to be appreciated at Cadets, everyone finds a place.
“It’s all about learning responsibility and leadership in a safe and fun environment.
“You get to meet so many people and make the best friends at annual camp.”
