Having witnessed the devastation left in the wake of the Tsunami that hit Japan in 2012, Yuuichi Iwata took it upon himself to help in anyway he could.
Inspired by Jacob French who walked across the country in 2011 to raise money for the Starlight Foundation, Mr Iwata created the Beyond Walk and prepared himself for the task ahead.
“I want to help the victims and the orphans left behind by the tsunami,” Mr Iwata said.
“Walking is not an easy thing but the victims need encouragement, I hope that my walk helps cheer them up.”
Mr Iwata left Perth in September 2013, and has walked his way across Australia with Sydney chosen as the final location for his herculean effort.
Currently passing through the Eurobodalla, the finish line is in sight for Mr Iwata and the end of his journey is creating some mixed feelings.
“I’m very excited to finish, but also a little bit sad,” Mr Iwata said.
“I love Australia, It’s a very good country and people are very kind.
“I want to meet many more amazing people, and see a lot more of the country.”
Travelling alongside the road with only a small cart, Mr Iwata admits that there are occasionally hairy moments, but for the most part he feels safe.
“Sometimes it’s a little bit scary when a big truck goes by, but otherwise I don’t feel in too much danger,” he said.
Mr Iwata will be heading back to Japan shortly after his walk has ended, but he expressed interest at returning, but perhaps in a more relaxing manner.
“I will never forget this adventure,” he said.
“Maybe in a few years I’ll come back and drive across to say thankyou to everyone.”
