On Saturday, Southern hosted the Lions at Nowra and started the game in dominant fashion.
Southern’s one-two passing cut holes through the Lions’ defence and earned their first corner.
Moruya’s Jazmine Zabel sent the ball in and Tuross Head’s Lani Johnson nailed a volley which narrowly missed.
Moruya’s Jasmin Hirst was controlled at left-back and helped her team thwart UNSW and launch attacks of its own.
The only goal of the match came in the 55th minute when Zabel slotted the ball into the back of the net after a deflection of the opposition.
Southern managed to keep the Lions scorelss despite one last surge.
A UNSW shot was deflected off the post and the follow-up was blocked by Talia Westley to ensure Southern victory.
On Sunday, the Southern girls carried their winning form into the match against Sydney Olympic and threatened the goals in the early stages.
Johnson led the charge from the backline, passing three opposition players before her on-target shot was saved in the third minute
Sydney Olympic tried to counter-attack but defenders Mariah Peever, Kiegan Tasker and Hirst foiled any attacking raid.
Southern’s best chance came in the 12th minute after Zabel’s corner found Maddi Goulding, who hit the crossbar.
Southern had a few more attempts at goal in the closing stages of the first half but the sides were deadlocked nil-all at the break.
In a three-minute burst early in the second half, Southern scored two goals.
Paris Ford’s shot snuck over the line while Zabel made sure of her shot and the side led 2-nil.
Five minutes later Sydney Olympic received a penalty and scored its first goal despite goalkeeper Kiara Rochaix managing to touch the ball.
The pace picked up, as did the foul count, but Ford secured Southern’s win with her second goal of the game in the 62nd minute.
Team manager Jodi Johnson credited Southern’s defence for the victory.
“The girls have the best defence in the entire competition having only had a six goals scored against them all season,” Johnson said.
“Kiegen Tasker and Jasmin Hirst have developed their game beautifully at their respective positions as left and right backs over the course of the season.”
Next week the girls travel to The Harrie Denning Centre to play Sutherland Shire.
