I MUST admit I was appalled at the news that the carbon tax had finally been scrapped last week.

For all its detractors the tax was positive proof that Australia was a progressive nation when it came to tackling the very real threat of climate change.
Now that’s it is gone, we’ve not only taken a step backwards in battling climate change in our country, but we’re also enhancing the increasingly humiliating image of Australia that the Abbott government is perpetuating on the world stage.
Some will argue that the tax was unfairly reaching into the pockets of big corporations, but when you consider that many, if not all, the businesses affected turn over millions, if not billions, a year in profit, then the tax didn’t seem to go far enough.
Consider as well that the revenue created from the tax could also have been put towards easing the strain on the budget, instead of having our schools and welfare services copping the brunt of this government’s cuts.
I can guarantee that in years to come, we’ll look back at this landmark decision and rue the consequences it created.
