Malua Bay duo Peter and Leah Hearne will represent Australia in Archery and BMX at their respective sport’s world championships.
Twelve-year-old Leah jetted out with her father Andrew to Rotterdam to join the Australian BMX team last weekend.
Leah will race at the purpose built BMX track at Ahoy Stadium.
She will compete against the world’s best in the 13s girls and under 16s cruiser division.
Leah said she was super excited to compete at her second world championship event.
“I competed in last year’s worlds in New Zealand but this is going to be the largest ever with more then 2800 riders expected,” Leah said.
Leah has high expectations and wants to make the final but understands the unpredictable nature of the sport.
“With very few second chances it only takes are crash to put you out of the finals,” she said.
Six hours before Leah returns, 15-year-old Peter will fly out with 20 members of the Australian Field Archery Team to compete at Yankton, South Dakota in the USA.
The three-time Australian champion will be using strength, precision and calm demeanour when tackling the world’s best juniors.
“I’m looking forward to competing against the world’s best at my first world championships,” Peter said.
Peter’s rapid rise on the national scene has been a revelation, only shooting for 18 months and competing for a year.
He has won more than 20 events and three national titles earlier this year.
Parents Andrew and Kim said they could not be more proud of the pair.
“We still find it hard to believe they are both Australian representatives,” Kim said.
“They do train very hard and their hard work does pay off.”
