Directors' Fortnight, the Cannes sidebar event that prides itself on discovering and launching new talent, has selected Australian movie These Final Hours for this year's program. Writer-director Zak Hilditch's stylish thriller/parable/character study, which stars Nathan Phillips and young newcomer Angourie Rice, is set on the last day on Earth, and shows the inhabitants of Perth finding very different ways to face the end. ''It's every director's dream to be shown at Cannes,'' Hilditch says, ''and this is a great way to honour everyone who worked so hard on this film.'' These Final Hours, which premiered at Melbourne International Film Festival last year, won The Age critics' award for the best Australian feature at MIFF. It opens in Australian cinemas on July 24.
