Batemans Bay Basketball secretary Kylie Armstrong says the league will be played on three “big weekends” - in Canberra, Wollongong and Albury.
“Batemans Bay Breakers is again going into the series confident it can match it with the big clubs,” she said.
“Our small coastal town now has the respect of the large powerhouse basketball clubs such as Canberra, Wollongong, Albury, Moss Vale and Shoalhaven, which all have huge club memberships and multi-courts.
“This is a credit to Bay Breakers coaching staff (Duncan Wilson, under 16 girls; Geoff Armstrong, under 16 boys; David Blewitt, under 14 girls; and Angela Rankin, under 14 boys) who have dedicated their time this season to prepare their teams and had to try to fit in training sessions in the only suitable court in Batemans Bay.”
The under 16 boys have nominated for division 1.
“With a majority of the team bottom-age players, this will be a challenge that the players are welcoming after winning the championship in the under 14s last season,” Armstrong said.
“Under 14 boys and the under 14 and under 16 girls nominated for division 2 and the club is confident that these teams will be very competitive.
“The fact is, it is simply an accomplishment to have our teams participating at this level.
“The cost, travel and training involved are an enormous commitment to ask of all involved in the program.”
She said all the teams had trained hard through the Easter holidays for the first round in Canberra this weekend.
“To be accepted into these events, a club must provide referees for each team competing,” Armstrong said.
“Batemans Bay Basketball has worked hard with its junior referee program for this reason and is extremely proud that four referees will travel with the teams to Canberra.
“Monique Leddy, Angus Armstrong, Kelsey Pye and Marissa Barry will be the club’s whistle blowers for this round.”
Away from the world of representative basketball, the winter weekday afternoon competition in the Bay will commence on May 5.
“Places are limited due to the one court facility so players need to nominate now to avoid disappointment; most age divisions are now full,” Armstrong said.
