In the past Malua Bay’s Radha Love would spend her time playing in the sand and building sandcastles while her older brother Finnley would hit the water with his board and surfing parents Melissa and Nathan.
Over the Christmas holidays she suddenly became interested in surfing and hasn’t looked back.
“We tried to encourage her in the early days but she wasn’t interested, then in the past six months she has taken to it,” Melissa said.
Radha’s brother, who is now seven, took to the waves at an earlier age but Melissa believed her daughter could be better at the same stage of development.
“I think she picked it up quicker,” Melissa said.
“She’s much more natural, has a good stance and seems to know what she is doing.”
Radha likes to visit McKenzies Beach and it’s both siblings’ favourite spot.
“They really like McKenzies and sometimes get upset if we want to go somewhere else,” Melissa said.
Melissa said Radha’s passion for surfing must come from her dad who has been catching breaks since he was 10.
“We all surf when we go to the beach but he has the patience to teach as well,” she said.
Melissa said the water temperature was still “really lovely” and the coming cooler months wouldn’t stop them from hitting the beach.
“We have wetsuits for when the water cools down but it’s great at the moment,” she said.
