Hosted by Southern NSW Medicare Local, the evening provided an opportunity for doctors, practice managers, specialists and allied health professionals to get together socially and meet their new colleagues.
Medicare Local supported the recruitment of six GPs to the area over the past 12 months, including Dr Issuru at Tuross Head Surgery, Dr Keshani at Moruya Medical Centre, Dr Xiao at Bayview Medical Cottage, Dr Ravi at Old Princes Highway Surgery, and Dr Sacoor and Dr Faraz at Narooma’s Blue House Surgery.
Also in attendance were three of the region’s six GP registrars currently on 12-month placements in Eurobodalla general practices.
Moruya GP and Medicare Local chairman Dr Martin Carlson welcomed the new GPs and registrars and said they brought highly valued skills to their communities.
He spoke of the challenges of moving to a new area and settling in with new workmates and making new friends.
“The Medicare Local not only invests significant effort to attract new GPs and allied health professionals, we also go to great lengths to retain them by making sure they are well matched to their new practice and that their families are happy and settled too,” he said.
“This care and attention can make a tremendous difference to the experiences of medical professionals when they are new to an area and can mean the difference between them staying and going.”
Dr Carlson made special mention of the registrars, saying they are a major asset to the medical workforce, providing full GP services as they finalise their training to become a vocationally registered general practitioner.
“I hope their positive experiences in this beautiful part of the world might see them return sometime in the future to bolster our local medical workforce,” he said.
