Tracks in the Deua and Mongo National Parks were reopened on April 12 in a trial program and about a dozen members of the South Coast Association of Trail Horse Riders (SCATS) are planning their first four-day adventure.
SCATS president Lesley Whale said the trails had been closed for more than 15 years, but rides would resume under the club’s original “trail boss”, John Davidge.
“Members will be heading into Bendethra following the same track as the early pioneers, who used it to move livestock and produce to and from Moruya and surrounds in the 1800s,” she said.
“The track travels through some very rugged and spectacular terrain.”
The trial has been planned with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).
“We have been working in close conjunction with Tim Shepherd and his team from National Parks, so as to tick all the boxes required, to ensure we comply with their wishes for the period of the trial,” Ms Whale said.
“We thank all involved in reopening these tracks, allowing all Australians to retrace their heritage.”
The pilot riding area traverses the Buckernbowra, Burra-Oulla and Woila-Deua wilderness areas, comprising 39 kilometres of trails.
