Anna Shedrina told police she had ''no idea'' that 6880 marijuana plants - weighing 2.7 tonnes with an estimated value between $10 million and $12 million - had been grown on her investment property in Victoria's north-east.

But it is the potentially drastic ramifications from a much larger crop grown more than 20 years ago that Ms Shedrina, 31, was equally unaware of, she now fears may wreck her dream of competing in Glasgow.

Ms Shedrina's mentor and coach is Marcello Casella, whose Griffith-based family company Casella Wines is Australia's largest exporter of wines, flagshipped by its Yellow Tail label.

Mr Casella was jailed in the 1990s with others over a reported $57 million marijuana crop in north Queensland that followed an investigation by the then National Crime Authority.

Fairfax Media does not suggest that Ms Shedrina or Mr Casella were aware of or involved in any way in the marijuana crop to which James Stammers and Noor Alam have pleaded guilty and been jailed for growing.

In her statement to police last May after the men were charged with cultivating a large commercial quantity of marijuana on her 32-hectare Cheshunt property, Ms Shedrina said she had a ''wine grape sale and purchase agreement'' with Marcello Casella until 2015.

Through her lawyer Terrence Grundy, Ms Shedrina, a member of the ''shadow team'' for the Games, said she felt that if linked to ''drug cultivation she will be rejected by selectors''.

Mr Grundy said she was ''thankful for assistance from the Casella family in pursuit of her sporting goals and she does not wish to see her good name and reputation, and also that of the Casella family name and reputation, damaged through her association with Marcello''.

Mr Grundy said Ms Shedrina was not aware of Mr Casella's drug conviction when she met him when he started sporting shooting with her six years ago.

''She heard from fellow shooters that Marcello was unable to shoot competitively throughout the 1990s and early 2000s as he had been in jail and that he had had to await a period of time … before he was allowed to reapply for a shooter's licence,'' he said.

''This did not worry her as she was interested in his coaching,'' Mr Grundy said. ''Also, Marcello was running a junior development squad so she thought that he must be OK.''

A qualified accountant, Ms Shedrina, who attended with Mr Grundy to make her police statement, said Casella Wines looked after the property, which she bought in 2010 for about $470,000. After Casella Wines ceased looking after her grapes the following year, she said, another arrangement led to a man phoning her in September 2012 to negotiate a deal.

When Ms Shedrina asked for details for a lease agreement, she was given the name Karamuir Karamuir, his age and address in NSW. Then while law firm Slater and Gordon in Wangaratta prepared the lease ''the same guy as earlier'' rang to say that Noor Alam, not Mr Karamuir, would sign the lease.

She told police she had no other phone contact ''with the male'' after the lease was drawn up, had not been to the property for more than two years and ''as far as I was aware my property was being used to grow grapes, and I had no idea about any cannabis plants at the property''.

In his sentencing remarks in the County Court last October, judge Mick Bourke noted that Stammers, 66, first claimed the crop was his idea, that he spent $50,000 on fertiliser and water systems from money saved from fruit picking, planted 10,000 seeds by hand himself and the proceeds from its sale - less $100,000 for Noor's help - would finance his retirement.

Judge Bourke said he, defence counsel Patrick Casey and, partly, prosecutor Jim Bessell ''expressed scepticism'' about Stammers' version, which changed a week later.

Mr Casey then put that each man was jointly involved, each were to receive $100,000, Stammers was not involved in financing or leasing the property, everything to grow the crop was present when he arrived and he had planted, watered and, presumably, fertilised it.

Regarding Stammers' changed instructions, the judge said Mr Casey's explanation - a ''self-preserving reluctance to implicate others'' - was plausible.

Mr Casey described Stammers as an unsophisticated ''loner'' without prior convictions. On the charge that carries a life sentence, Stammers was jailed for seven years with a minimum of four.

When Alam, 39, recently appeared before Judge Bourke, prosecutor Julian Ayres categorised his role as assisting the crop's growth by regularly watering, pruning and fertilising it.

Defence barrister Stephen Lindner detailed his client's long-running but failed class action for refugee status, and his limited intellectual capabilities and mental health issues.

Judge Bourke, who jailed him for 6½ years with a minimum of three years and nine months, accepted Alam was at the ''non-entrepreneurial end'' of the operation but from which he expected substantial reward.

Fairfax Media tried unsuccessfully a number of times to contact Mr Casella for comment.
