The undermanned under 12s side was assisted by Bomaderry who evened up the numbers for the Magic’s first game of the season.
Coach Simon Wheatley said many players in the side were playing their first AFL game.
“Our older players showed their experience and after a few minutes everyone caught on to what they needed to do,” Wheatley said.
“Jayden Jessop, Eli Chatfield and Taylor Kilby-Connolly had huge efforts running out the game without many, if any, breaks.
“Finn Wheatley set up his first goal and it was a great team effort.”
The under 12s went down 10.9 (69) to 1.3 (9).
Mogo’s under 14s began their game strongly as Tremayne Chatfield dominated the centre nabbing most of the hit outs to drive his team forward.
Chatfield’s attacking prowess was on display and he managed to kick a long bomb from 50m out.
Brent Wellington was at his “devastating best” in the air and on the ground as he slotted home five goals for the match off the half forward line.
Kalem Davis-Wighton turned in his best performance for the club controlling the back half of the ground with his high marking skills and rebounding long kicks which were to the advantage of the midfielders.
Wheatley said the highlight of the game was Jay Stewart’s goal in the second half.
“He gathered the loose ball deep in our forward line, spun onto his trusty right boot, and snapped truly to put the result beyond doubt,” Wheatley said.
“He had one of the most sensational celebrations we have seen.
“It included 12 high fives, a run down the boundary line, a hug for the coach, swinging the jumper in the air and a well earned drink of water.”
Wheatley believes Stewart is an inspiration at the club.
“It’s great to see this young man pulling the boots on with his mates and getting rewards for his hard work around the club over the last three years,” he said.
At the siren Mogo came out on top 11.5 (71) to 1.5 (11).
For the first time since its inception, Mogo fielded an under 16s team in the Shoalhaven competition.
Bomaderry’s strong outfit tested the Magic as both teams made attacking raids on the smaller Mogo Oval.
A few positional moves settled the Magic down and Shannon McCarron, Blake Westbrook and Jordan Nancarrow began to lead the way.
“The boys did the heavy work in the packs to win the ball for us,” Wheatley said.
Tristan Nye shouldered the majority of the ruck duties for the day while Jordan Clarke provided a solid target at centre half forward in the second half. Wellington also proved his ability backing up from the previous game with another bag of five.
Mogo had a four goal lead at three-quarter time but Bomaderry snuck back in to the game kicking three quick goals.
Another breakaway goal to Wellington sealed the victory as Mogo ran out winners 15.5 (95) to 12.6 (78).
Wheatley said the Magic were still in need of players for the under 12s while there are some sports in the under 14s and 16s.
“If there are any players looking to play, training is on Wednesday and Friday nights at 4pm at Mogo Oval,” he said.
This weekend the Magic take on the Ulladulla Dockers before a two week break for the school holidays.
