Colleagues told the 24-year-old she would be nominated for a Logie but she never thought it would actually happen.
“When I saw my name and photo on the list I was like ‘woah that is me’,” she said.
“I’ve always watched the Logies so being nominated is bizarre.”
Having the show also nominated for most popular drama fills Ms Earl with joy as “the cast is like family”.
She plays the role of Anna Bligh, a daughter in a rich farming family, who rebels and takes control of her life despite her parents’ wishes.
Set in the 1950s, Ms Earl’s character Anna is the youngest of the Bligh children and the most inherently ‘modern’ of the privileged pastoralist family.
Still adjusting to being recognised in the street, Ms Earl finds it “weird” that she has become like those whom she once admired.
She always pictured herself in theatre rather than being a famous actor in a TV series or film.
“I never wanted to be famous, but now that I am it’s strange,” she said.
“I always thought I would do theatre, that’s what I trained in.”
At present Ms Earl’s time is filled with filming season two of A Place to Call Home, attending photo shoots and getting ready to put together film auditions for a US management agency that she has recently signed with.
The partnership will soon see her floating between America and Australia.
“I’m excited for the opportunities the US will bring to my career but at the same time it’s quite nerve-wracking because it is such a different step-up,” she said.
“There is so much more variety and opportunity [in America].
“They [the US agency] came knocking on my door in October last year and I thought, why are you even talking to me?”
Ms Earl is still contracted with Channel Seven for another series and won’t back out of the show she committed to and loves.
“I won’t finish until the director decides Anna’s story is done,” she said.
So far Ms Earl’s time on the series as Anna has been an exciting new chapter in her career.
“Before A Place to Call Home I had never been a regular on a series and almost always got cast as the girlfriend or the girl next door,” Ms Earl said.
“I love playing Anna; she’s a rebel even in 2014, let alone the 1950s.”
Ms Earl still tries to return to Broulee, which is where she grew up and where her family still lives.
“I try and get down six times year, which is not enough,” she said.
“I was down over Christmas and went to the Bay City Cinemas and Anna and Sam’s pizzeria in Moruya.”
While she was in the Eurobodalla eating fish and chips at the beach, she received a phone call from the US agency and thought “wow I couldn’t be further removed from my crazy life right now”.
“I love coming down the coast to relax, I normally turn my phone off and spend quality time with family,” she said.
Ms Earl hopes the Eurobodalla will vote for her in TV Week’s Logie awards for most popular new talent. To vote visit www.tvweeklogie awards.com.au.
