Rural Fire Service crews and police were called to the fire on Coronation Drive, across from Frances St, about 4pm on Thursday.
By the time emergency services arrived the van was completely engulfed by flames.
Because it had magnesium in the construction of the body, putting out the fire proved difficult.
Firefighters used foam instead of water and battled the blaze for about an hour.
A police spokesman said it was believed the fire started due to a mechanical fault.
He said the incident was not being treated as suspicious but further investigations were under way as maintenance had been done on the van prior to the incident.
No one was injured in the fire, however 10 surfboards and a "substantial" number of wet suits stored in the back were destroyed.
