The accident happened at about 6.40pm when a Commodore sedan being driven south collided with a northbound semitrailer at Meroo Meadow, 10km south of Berry.
The sedan was then hit by a Nissan Skyline and a four-wheel-drive also travelling south.
The South Nowra man died at the scene while the 76-year-old driver of the Nissan was taken to Shoalhaven Hospital with chest injuries.
The man at the wheel of the four-wheel-drive, a 30-year-old from Bega, escaped injury as did the driver of the semitrailer, a 50-year-old from Temagog, west of Kempsey.
The fatal accident closed the busy highway overnight while accident investigators were at the scene. It was reopened early this morning (Friday).
The highway was closed between Bolong Road and Victoria Road but all lanes are now open and diversions have been lifted following a police investigation into the accident.
There are no delays in the area.
