The accident happened near Misty Mountain Road, around 15km west  of Nelligen, at about 9.30am, when a four-wheel-drive travelling east left the roadway, slammed into a rock wall and rolled.

The male driver died at the scene and a woman was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

The major link between Canberra and the coast was closed to allow crash scene investigators to inspect the site.

Traffic is now returning to normal but, with rain in the area, motorists are being asked to take extra care.
