Tomorrow at 9.30am the congregation of the Batemans Bay Anglican Church of the Ascension will gather at the Herarde Street church where the ministers and pastors from all churches in Batemans Bay will share the history of their congregations.

“They will acknowledge our shared Christian heritage and give thanks to God for the unity of the churches in Batemans Bay,” said Bishop Lambert, who as well as being minister of the Batemans Bay Anglican Church is also Regional Bishop to the South Coast, Snowy and Monaro regions.

This will be followed by a cross walk down Beach Road to board the vessel Merinda, which will take the cross up-river to Nelligen where it will be passed on to the next church in Braidwood.  

“This is all part of a pilgrimage initiated by Bishop Stuart Robin-son, Bishop of the Canberra and Goulburn Arch-

diocese, who set out in Snug Cove, Eden, last Friday, carrying a two-metre wooden cross, as part of the Diocese’s 150th celebrations,” Bishop Lambert said.

“Parishes and schools en route will be involved in some way, either directly walking with the cross with the Bishop, or including the cross in community activities. Each walk will begin with prayer and conclude with events like a sausage sizzle and, in one case, a river cruise.”

The pilgrimage culminates in Canberra with a walk around the parliamentary triangle before daylight on Easter Sunday (March 31), followed by a dawn  Easter service on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin.

“The walk is both a deeply personal call and a rallying cry to local communities,” Bishop Robinson said. 

“Traditionally the cross is a symbol of Jesus’s selflessness and love and a sign of his ministry of reconciliation to all humanity. My aim is to highlight the ministry of Christ crucified, risen, ruling and returning.”
