The association, which counts 99 per cent of the town’s business community as members, decided last week on a campaign to keep visitor numbers up throughout the year.
“We are using the slogan ‘Tuross Head – the perfect place for a holiday since 1924’,” association secretary Lei Parker said.
The campaign has already begun with the production of online brochures featuring the highlights of Tuross Head, and is set to continue with the canvassing of council for help with the drive and the establishment of a year-round events calendar.
“We can’t solely rely on Eurobodalla Tourism because they don’t have the budget or resources,” Mr Parker said.
The idea is to benefit the long-term financial and social health of the town.
“Tuross needs to empower itself,” Mr Parker said.
“This is an employment initiative to ensure the sustainability of Tuross.”
Mr Parker said that Tuross Head was at a disadvantage compared with Batemans Bay, Moruya and Narooma.
“When you go through those towns, you see what they have straight away, but the highway goes past Tuross and you don’t see it,” he said.
“We are going to canvass council to have a sign erected which shows the passing parade of travellers what is available in Tuross.”
The Tuross Head Business Owners Association recognises how dependent the town is on tourism, and that this tails off during winter - something they want to stop.
“We want to attract cyclists, motorcyclists, fisherfolk and more with a wider annual events calendar,” Mr Parker said.
“We have a big, enthusiastic cycling fraternity here, and we want to run a cycling event called the Tuross Classic. We had a successful kayak event last year and we want to promote Tuross as a family kayaking venue with safe waters.”
