The spokesman also confirmed that a shorebird - the pied oystercatcher - that inhabits the sandflats east of the marina, is the reason that the complete redevelopment has not happened.
“The original significant redevelopment proposal has not been able to progress due to the presence of the pied oystercatcher (a migratory shorebird species listed as endangered under the Threatened Species Conservation Act 1995) inhabiting the sand flat areas within the lease area,” the spokesman said.
”Crown Lands has agreed to vary the leasing requirements to facilitate the marina operator (developer Ariadne) commencing redevelopment and refurbishment of the current marina footprint. It is envisaged that this work will start in the near future.
”The marina operator will also continue to liaise with the Office of Environment and Heritage to explore options that may be appropriate to enable a further expansion of the marina whilst still protecting the pied oystercatcher and its habitat.”
Marina spokesman Rob Bowmaker believes that an upgrade will happen and it will be of great benefit to boat users.
“We are ready here; we’ve just got to get the okay,” he said.
“It will go ahead and there are exciting times coming up.”
