New mural offical for Batemans Bay skate park

The new mural at Hanging Rock skate park will incorporate the previous mural, which featured a memorial to Trent Budinsky, even if it has not done so already.

“A framed image of the last mural is going to be installed on the wall soon,” Eurobodalla Mayor Councillor Fergus Thomson said.

The new mural was unveiled this week.

Artists Daniel Wismer and Brode Compton were contracted by Eurobodalla Shire Council and have worked with members of the community to create the new design, which depicts the activity of the skate park, a pelican and the view out to the Tollgate Islands.

The skate park has been open for use since July 7, but the official opening is tomorrow.

There will be music by DJs, skateboard and BMX demonstrations, a sausage sizzle and prizes including skate and BMX gear.

Council’s policy is to update the mural every five years.

The words “RIP Trent” were prominent in the previous mural, commemorating Batemans Bay teenager Trent Budinsky, who died after an accident in Batehaven in 2006.

There has been much consternation about the decision to change it, much of it from friends and family of Trent, but council insists on sticking to the updating policy.

“The image brings a new era to the iconic wall but the old mural has not been forgotten,” Cr Thomson said.

“We want to ensure the mural continues to have meaning for residents.”
