Grants were given to 11 deserving students. Musical presentations were given by Sean Douglas, (classical guitar), and Holly Sweeney, (piano). A grantee from last year, Molly Rodwell, gave an informative speech about her first year at university.
In his welcome speech, Foundation chairman Peter Wood noted that since the first dinner in 1995, 131 students had received grants totalling more than $350,000. Of that amount, more than 63 per cent was given in the past eight years, signifying the growth of the Foundation to match the ever-increasing need of students hoping to go on to tertiary education.
“Although there may be other educational charities in south-east NSW, the Batemans Bay Youth Foundation is by far the most significant and probably the oldest,” Mr Wood said.
“This gives great credit to the community, because the Foundation is, above all else, a charitable instrument of the community.”
However Mr Wood said pledges by large companies had now dried up, and the Foundation was appealing to all businesses in the community to show some generosity to a very worthy cause.
“Cash donations from $200 per year upwards will be most welcome,” he said.
“The second point is that students who intend to pursue tertiary education, but first take a gap year to earn some money, may still apply for a grant by downloading the application form from www.bbyf.org.au.
To be meaningful in today’s environment, grants have been increased from $2500 to $3000, a useful sum for the first year of study.”
