John Alexander McRitchie, 31, of Shady Willows Caravan Park, Batemans Bay, was found guilty of stealing a Nexus Tablet valued at $319 from a Batemans Bay electronics store.
He is currently an unlawful citizen, having arrived in Australia in September 2011 on a 12-month visa.
Police facts state that Mr McRitchie entered Dick Smith Electronics at Batemans Bay at 9.53am on November 3 and asked staff about the Nexus Tablet.
After he left the store, one was found to be missing and CCTV footage showed Mr McRitchie removing the security device from it without triggering the alarm.
At 3.20pm on November 22, Mr McRitchie inquired about a Nexus Tablet protective cover at Harvey Norman Batemans Bay. Staff were aware of the theft of the tablet from Dick Smith, and alerted police, who arrived soon after.
When questioned by police about the theft, Mr McRitchie admitted it and a search of his backpack revealed the stolen item, after which he was arrested. He began his sentence on November 28.
