Stingrays aren’t, perhaps, the cutest creatures going around, but that hasn’t stopped them becoming something of an attraction at the ramp.
The rays gather there every day, recognising the spot as something of a restaurant courtesy of fishers who clean their catch and provide them with a buffet.
Region X Kayak Experiences, which operates from the ramp, has developed a symbiotic relationship with these winged wonders of the water.
“They are very tame and swim close to our kayaks,” Region X chief instructor Josh Waterson said.
“They are quite inquisitive, and have become a real attraction to the Mossy Point ramp.”
Mr Waterson said the spot attracts both smooth spotted stingrays, also know as bull rays, and the less common eagle spotted rays.
“Sometimes when I’m there for a few hours of a morning we will have about six visits from different rays, up to four or five of them at a time,” he said.
Mr Waterson said the rays were incredibly graceful in the water.
“The way they move; they are like dolphins; you never get sick of them,” he said.
“Sometimes they swim under our glass-bottom kayaks, which is quite spectacular.”
These rays have become the Kardashians of the Euro-
bodalla waterways, as not only do they have much-talked about rear ends, but they also have their own reality show. Sort of.
“We take pics of them daily and put them on Facebook, and let people know what they are up to,” he said.
“We also have footage of them on YouTube.”
Mr Waterson said the rays evoked mixed emotions among those who encounter them.
“Some people are scared of them, but they are really docile and placid,” he said.
“People sometimes reach out and touch them, but we don’t encourage that.”
He said rays have a bad rap they don’t necessarily deserve.
“The Steve Irwin thing has been disastrous for their image.”
Mr Waterson would like to increase the rays’ fan base.
“At the moment, it’s mainly locals, fishermen and kayakers who know about them, but I believe they could be huge drawcards,” he said.
“I have written to council to request a general upgrade to the ramp area to attract more people to it as a viewing area.”
