A Narooma retailer was given two $50 notes last week, which were found to be fake when the takings were examined at the end of the day.
Police say the notes were of poor quality and probably photocopies.
Inspector Gary Megay, from Local Area Command, said that feeling the notes to see if they are paper or plastic and checking the printing in the window would help in picking real notes from fake ones.
He advised retailers to be especially vigilant, especially during busy periods or late at night.
“It is important to have good light over tills,” he said.
If confronted with a fake note, Inspector Megay said retailers should take quick action.
“Secure the notes, get a description of the person who gives it to you, and call the police,” he said.
“Also check closed circuit TV if you have it.”
Inspector Megay said fake notes were almost always large denominations such as $50 or $100, and in a case such as at Narooma, where the quality of the notes was poor, the person handing the note over was usually the one who fabricated it in the first place.
