“It was probably the best night of my life,” he said.
This weekend just might be the tsunami.
On Sunday, with “alt-indie rock” band Railjam, the 15-year-old South Durras singer and guitarist gets the chance to belt out home-grown teen tunes before international blues acts and an estimated 6000 fans
“We are going to give it our best shot and see who we can impress,” Matt said.
Is it the big international acts at the Great Southern Blues Festival he has in mind?
Nuh uh. Matt was raised on a diet of Sherbert, courtesy of his dad and mum Anne-maree, and if ex-frontman Daryl Braithwaite, now with The Travellers, notices, he’ll be stoked.
Matt performs with fellow Year Nines, Liam Gray, of Malua Bay, Joe Facchini, of East Lynne and the Year Eight baby Jordan Trkulja, 14, of Canberra.
He says there is nothing strange about an indie outfit playing at a blues show.
“We have got bluesy rhythms and all our guitar solos are straight from blues influence,” he said.
“Liam and I were both taught as blues guitar players when we first started.
“It is a great grounding because it really lets you go free on the guitar and just shred it!”
He credits guitar teachers Dave Berry and Peter Rich with setting him on the rock and roll road.
“They are both very good guitar teachers,” he said.
Mr Rich will also perform at the festival with Blue Murder.
He’s delighted four local acts were selected.
“It takes the regional out of regional,” he said.
“The misconception is that in a regional area everything is second rate, but if we can field four bands at the one festival featuring that quality of international performers it means there is something right happening in this area, musically and otherwise.
“It is a testament to the quality of artists here and also Neil’s (promoter Neil Mumme) conviction to put them on.
“He could easily just ignore local talent.”
Other local acts, The St Peter’s Blues Band and Tony Jaggers and Friends, will also perform.
