Past and current members of the NSW Rural Fire Service Depot Beach brigade gathered at the Depot Beach fire station on Saturday to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fire station.
Shoalhaven district manager Superintendent Ian Stewart, Shoalhaven City councillor Josi Young and long-time supporters of the brigade joined the celebration.
Brigade captain Alan Hyde said more than 50 people joined the 14 active and probationary members of the brigade in the celebration.
Member Stuart McFarlane, who has been a volunteer firefighter with the brigade for 29 years, was the foreman in the building of the establishment.
“The day we put the roof on, it was raining,” Mr McFarlane said.
“We had to get surfy blokes to come up and help.”
He said they needed someone who could walk on wet slippery surfaces.
The building, funded by the brigade and Shoalhaven City Council, cost $4000 to build with the labour all
volunteered.
“We had a small tin shed at North Durras (before),” Mr McFarlane said.
He said when they laid the slab they had to stay most of the night to ensure there were no kangaroos skipping over the wet concrete.
