The under 12s Seahawks took to the field first against their old rivals Bay and Basin, in what turned out a torrid affair for the full four quarters.
Possession of the ball was paramount and defence was critical, so shots at the goals were at a minimum. Goals weren’t produced until the third quarter, when the Bombers took the lead.
It seemed it was all over for the young Seahawks side, but rock-solid determination and spirit saw them come home with two goals in the last five minutes of the final quarter and win the grand final 2.7.19 to 2.4.16.
The player of the final was Liam Nelson, an honour well-deserved, and Jarrod Thompson was runner-up in the umpires’ season best and fairest.
The under 14s grand final against the Ulladulla Pirates was a different story.
The Seahawks showed why they were raging favourites to take the flag, starting the game with great confidence in their ability and in each other. They produced the opening goals within minutes.
The Seahawks were never headed and remained in control throughout the match with skill and team work that has been produced all season, winning the grand final 7.15.57 to 3.5.23.
“What a fantastic Father’s Day, to come up here to Bomaderry and take out the double!” an elated Seahawks club president John Veneris said.
“The club is very proud of all these boys’ achievements”.
Player of the grand final went to Elijah Edwards, who was on fire, and the umpires’ season best and fairest runner-up was Nick Broad-McGregor.
The Seahawks now prepare for a huge day on Saturday when they host the SCAFL Grand Final for the first time in 20 years. All grades from the under 13s to first grade will be held on the day.
“Come and support your local AFL football club and see the Batemans Bay Seahawks take on the Diggers in the first grade grand final,” Veneris said.
Gates will open at 9.30am, and the main game starts at 2.15pm.
