Greenwaste will be collected from households on a reasonably regular basis or can be taken to the recycling centre at the Surf Beach Tip where it will be processed by a new company, Cobowra Environmental Services Limited, a spin-off from the Cobowra Community Development Employment Program (CDEP).
The new company won the tender to recycle greenwaste from Eurobodalla Shire Council last year and started the service on February 1.
It has invested $250,000 in plant and machinery with help from an ATSIC (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission) grant to be paid out over 10 years.
It's envisaged that eight to 10 people will eventually be employed in the service which is expected to turn a profit through sales of firewood, compost, potting mix and mulch.
"There will be a fee to deposit waste but it's less than the tipping fee to encourage people to use the service," said Cobowra CDEP coordinator Jim Hampson.
Peter Carriage is the site and service manager and assistance will be on hand if required when off-loading.
Cobowra is not new to this type of project having run a successful but smaller recycling service out of Moruya for several years.
"This is much bigger and Corkhill Brothers in Canberra will be providing technical advice to make sure we meet the stringent quality assurance requirements and EPA standards," said Mr Hampson.
"We've been making mulches but the next step it to make potting mix which is more technical.
"This is the first project of its type and we're hoping to provide a model for other CDEP groups and other shires around Australia".
