The Broulee Dolphins made a successful return to the South Coast Rugby Union competition with an impressive first-up 18-15 win over last season’s premiers the Batemans Bay Boars at Captain Oldrey Park on Saturday.
The local derby was played in greasy conditions due to heavy rain earlier in the day and points were at a premium. The Dolphins and Boars scored two tries apiece with goal kicking proving to be the difference in the end.
After a scrappy opening Broulee enjoyed a period where they dominated possession and territory on the back of a number of Boars handling errors. The Dolphins eventually turned the dominance into points when Chris Prow nailed a penalty goal from right in front to give the home side a 3-nil lead.
The Boars replied in turn with David Warner converting a penalty attempt of his own from 25 metres out to level the scores.
Just as both sides were beginning to work their way into the contest there was a lengthy delay when Dolphins player Rolland Halligan was stretchered from the field with a broken leg.
After play resumed the Dolphins hit the front again when a beautifully timed ball from Prow put Daniel Leth in a hole. Leth then threw a precision cut-out pass to Troy Ireland on the wing who sold a dummy to the Boars fullback before scoring in the corner. The try meant the Dolphins carried an 8-3 lead into the halftime interval.
After the break, the Boars had two chances to reduce the deficit to 8-6 but Warner was fractionally off the mark with both penalty goal attempts.
However, the Boars eventually managed to add to their points tally when a clever ball from substitute Tyson Pan put Corey Maddison away down the blindside. Maddison had too much pace for the Broulee cover defence and leveled the scores at
8-all. Warner had the chance to put the Boars in front but his conversion attempt was off the mark.
That was as close as the Boars would get to taking the lead with the Dolphins outside centre Pat McMahon bursting through the Bay’s defensive line to run 45 metres to score underneath the posts. Prow’s successful conversion gave the Dolphins a 15-8 advantage.
Another Prow penalty goal put the Dolphins up by 10 points before Brent Pan scored a late consolation try for the visitors.
Broulee team manager Jesse White said the result was the perfect way for Dolphins to return to the competition.
“It was a good start to the season for us that’s for sure,” he said.
“You don’t want to read too much into the first game because it’s only early in the season but we’re definitely pleased with the result.
“Particularly after having been out of the competition for 12 months it’s good to know that we can be competitive this year.”
Boars coach Matt Ryan said that his side were second best on the day.
“We’re disappointed with the outcome but at the end of the day they were the better team,” he said.
“We didn’t have the right attitude and maybe there was a bit of complacency there because of last year’s premiership win so hopefully the result might give us a bit of a kick up the backside.”
