Picture perfect paddling

05 Feb, 2010 08:00 AM
After having to cancel last week’s paddle due to the gale wind warning for the South Coast, Saturday’s Bay Adventure Kayakers time trial saw excellent paddling conditions with overcast skies and no wind.

Nineteen boats hit the water, with close racing between current club champion Dave Lloyd and new member Damo Staunton from Ulladulla. Lloyd won both line and handicap honours for the 11.5km course, and Steve Ison in his TK1 was third in a commendably strong performance.

On the 6.5km course, Ken Bellette once again led in the field with Karmen Ison less than 20 seconds behind, followed by the ever-improving Wayne Fanning, who took out the handicap honours over that distance.

Shane Ison paddled strongly over the 2km course in his K1 kayak to better his previous time by two minutes.

Jessica and Micheal Overend were back on the water after a break, and Deb Bellette was also in good form after an absence from paddling.

Russell Lutton also had his first timed paddle since the World Masters Games competition last year.

Graeme Ison remains in the lead in the handicap series, although with points accumulated from three-quarters of the events only being taken into account at the end of the season, a number of paddlers are still in a position to take out the club championship.

January 30 (handicap in brackets)

11.5km: D Lloyd 71.07 (+14), Steve Ison 72.31 (+9), G Ison 73.09 (+8), I Castell-Brown 74.14 (+4), R Willis 76.01 (+6), D Staunton 59.17 (n/a).

6.5km: W Fanning 37.01 (+8), C Williams 42.40 (+3), K Bellette 46.25 (+10), K Ison 46.44 (+10), R Lutton 48.01 (+10), J Overend 51.48 (0), M Overend 51.49 (0), D Bellette 53.41 (0).

2km: Shane Ison 15.34, E and C Ison 22.00, S Parkinson 21.52, A Parkinson 21.53.

During the summer season Bay Adventure Kayakers paddle every Saturday from the boat ramp at Nelligen at 8am, after race brief at 7.45am.

All paddlers with any type of kayak, surf ski or canoe are welcome to participate. Insurance fee of $10 applies to non-members. Contact Roy Willis on 4471 6600.
